Kavi

Kavi is the oldest male donkey at our clinic and also the naughtiest.  He was born at the donkey clinic when we took in his mother. After being with us for such a long time, he definitely thinks he's the boss here at the DCEC. Kavi is loved by everyone at the clinic because he loves when we groom him and he is a naughty boy who makes everyone laugh. 

Kavi is a happy and healthy older donkey and requires ongoing deworming and hoof care. He is currently available for adoption. 

Banjo is our fluffiest donkey. He was rescued in 2021 after a serious car accident which completely severed one of his hooves but he has recovered well after treatment.

His mane is impressively cuddly and he really loves being groomed so much that he sometimes pushes other donkeys out of the way to be groomed first. He's an active and lively donkey who ‘bounces’ around but he's also very friendly, patient and good natured. His favourite food is CO3 grass. He’s a green fodder addict. 

If he likes you, he will place his head on your shoulder and cuddle into you. He would love to be sponsored and if you visit he will no doubt give you many cuddles as a thank you. 

We picked up this donkey when she was injured and have tried to release her back into the wild after treatment. But she kept returning to us so we have decided to take her in. Despite only recently having joined us, she is already incredibly trusting and loving. We are still in the process of treating her for all her fur matting and groom her daily which she patiently accepts and returns the favour with small kisses and nibbles on your hands. Sometimes she will rest her head against yours. 

She is tiny, young and still very skinny so she sometimes gets bullied by other donkeys.

As she is new and has never had a sponsor, she doesn't have a name yet. If you adopt her, you are allowed to name her!

Maxie is a very communicative donkey and will often bray to make his opinion heard. The donkey rescue team picked him up when he was abandoned at approximately 8 months old, likely due to his mother's death as donkeys are very dedicated to their young. When he arrived he had a big infected wound on his front right leg with the bone exposed. After a month of treatment his leg had healed. Locals told us he had been without his mother for about four months and he is very lucky to have survived. 

Now, Maxie is thriving and at over 8 years old he has become a very beautiful donkey. He is up for adoption and would love it if you visited him and gave him some chickpeas and pets. 

Maxie is lucky and is being sponsored already by an adopter who has adopted him together with Cody, Cindy and Dusty. 

This jenny was taken in together with her baby in hopes to save another baby donkey who was found injured without his mum. We were hoping she would adopt the baby donkey. Unfortunately the injured baby donkey did not survive, but we are keeping mum and baby safe and well fed to ensure the baby grows up healthy. 

We would love for her to be adopted and as she does not have a name yet, you have the chance to name her as her adopter.

Of all our female donkeys, Dusty is the most majestic in strength and appearance. She is very different in body, height and color than the other donkeys in our Centre and she has a beautiful spiral shape in the middle of the face. Dusty is the most agile female donkey and she always wants to be clean. To this day we have not seen her rolling in the soil. 

Dusty does not like fights so if there is a conflict between the male and female donkeys, she will stand as a referee and separate. She stands still during her grooming time but she will not come into the hands of anyone who calls her harshly. She will only come to you if you show her love and patience. She loves to approach guests who come to visit.

Dusty loves to bathe and her favorites foods are peanuts and carrots.

Similarly to Kavi, Daisy was born at the donkey clinic and she has been with us ever since. At 5 years old, she is still young though. She is a very shy but sweet donkey with the occasional naughty streak. 

Daisy loves to play with children when they visit. She likes being near them and will rub her body against them.  

Daisy has been adopted already.

Danny is our smallest donkey and is also our youngest male donkey apart from the babies. He is only 2 years old but very curious. Taking a photo of him can sometimes be a challenge because he loves to check out the camera and will push his cute nose right into it. While it's a challenge it also makes it an incredibly cute task if you like donkey cuddles!

Danny has a wonderful sponsor already. 

Cody was found injured at 5 months old close to a petrol station in town. Luckily, she didn't have to wait long for rescue: Someone saw this and immediately called us to help. At the clinic she became best friends with Maxie and the two still spend a lot of time together. Cody's favourite foods are carrots, bananas and chickpeas and she does not like sharing them - not even with her best friend! 

Together with New Mom 1, this jenny is a recent addition to the Donkey Clinic and Education Center. She was taken in for the same reason as the other mum donkey in hopes to save another baby donkey who was found injured and without his mum. We are keeping mum and baby safe and well fed to ensure the baby grows up healthy.

This is one of our two current baby donkeys. She was taken in together with her mum. She is a bit more shy than her male counterpart, which follows her mum's behaviour.

Rafe is  funny and she likes testing people. She is not a big fan of grooming but tolerates it for a while and then give you a small nip when she has had enough. She was taken in by another rescue in Mannar town and we continued her care when the rescue centre shut down. She had severe leg injuries and still has some deformities due to this. 

Rafe has been adopted by the same sponsor as Danny. 

Cindy is a beautiful white donkey - a rare colouring. She is a feisty donkey and comes from the jungle areas of Periyakarisal in Pesalai. It took us two attempts to rescue her as she was hiding in the jungle and we trekked by foot for more than 5 kilometres but could not find her. A second report came through not long after and finally we were successful. When Cindy is freshly washed she is pure white but she is not a fan of being groomed, is very strong and does not like wearing a headcollar!
