The Donkey Clinic & Education Centre (DCEC) is a great initiative that combines animal welfare and village development. In 2014 we started helping hurt donkeys. Finally, in 2019 we were able to build the donkey Clinic Facility and are now able to give veterinary medical care to our donkeys.
The DCEC is a buzzing place with a lot of activity. In our Donkey Clinic Facility the donkeys are examined, treated and released back into the wild. A few are tamed and kept in the petting area for educational purposes.
Through this initiative we are able to change minds: not seeing the donkey as a dirty animal and a road pest, but as a smart and friendly animal.
We are working closely with the local community and are aiming to help foster local economic development with a number of start-ups. This includes fieldwork, opportunities for vet students from across the world, donkey tourism and even donkey fertilizer! We are trying hard to make this a self-sustaining venture. But any help is greatly appreciated and needed.

The Donkey Clinic & Education Centre offers a variety of activities!
When you come to visit us we can give you a presentation about the history and health of donkeys in Mannar and about our initiatives to help these animals and the local community.
We highly recommend interacting with the donkeys! You can take pictures, feed and even groom them: they love it! Moreover, if you really like a donkey, you can choose to adopt one: the monthly or yearly donation will cover the costs of care for the donkey you adopt!
The Donkey Clinic Facility has a beautiful forested ground where the donkeys are regularly taken to graze, and a pond in the middle offers an oasis of peace.

Do you have a passion for animal welfare and want to help in a more hands-on way? Are you planning on visiting Sri Lanka and the Mannar Area? For one day or two or longer? Then this place is for you: please contact us!
We are also always looking for veterinary students who want to gain hands-on experience. If you are planning to do volunteer work abroad, please contact us!
Over the last five years we've helped more than 500 donkeys! From light cases that stay just a few days, to hard cases that need help for many months.
Helping hands are always required and welcomed!
"So grateful places like this exist in the world. The work done here for the local donkey population is vital. It’s very well equipped for medical cases, and the resident donkeys play an important role in helping to educate people. The centre also helps the local people out with meaningful employment which is great. There are multiple enterprises which is really inspiring, wish we had known there is a room to stay here as it seemed a really peaceful place. We can only wish you all the best for the future, keep up the amazing work!! 💜"

"We had the privilege of visiting the Donkey Animal Education & Clinic in Mannar, and it was a truly enlightening experience. The dedication of the team here towards the welfare of these animals is remarkable. They provide essential education about donkey care and run a clinic that’s making a positive impact on the local community. We left with a deeper understanding of these incredible creatures and immense respect for the work being done here. Highly recommended for anyone looking to engage with animals and contribute to their well-being."

"If you are near Mannar I can highly recommend to visit the Donkey Clinic. The family who runs it is adorable and caring a lot for the community and the donkeys. There are several resident donkeys for educational and therapeutical purposes. Additonally they also have emergency donkey who were injured and rescued from the street and brought to the clinic to cure. But will be released to their habitat after regaining their strength. You can feed the donkeys, make pictures, groom them, etc. There’s the possibility to stay in the guest room as a guest or volunteer to support the clinic. The local food that is cooked here is just amazing. I can highly recommend to visit the place."
